CHAPTER LEADERSHIP ROLES

These roles help guide and support each Ride Out of the Darkness® chapter. Chapter Leaders work as a team and are never expected to do everything alone. Training, systems, and support are provided. All Chapter Leadership roles are 12-month commitments designed to support steady monthly planning and team continuity. Time commitment varies by role.

  • ROLE TYPE
    Chapter Leadership Role — 12-Month Assignment

    ROLE PURPOSE
    Serves as the operational backbone of the Ride Out of the Darkness® chapter, ensuring all planning, systems, and teams operate smoothly and in alignment with the Love Surrounds You® mission.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
    • Oversees and supports all Chapter Directors
    • Maintains the master planning timeline
    • Serves as the primary liaison between the chapter and National Leadership
    • Ensures safety, compliance, and operational flow
    • Provides leadership and coordination on event day

    TIME COMMITMENT
    • 12-month leadership commitment
    • Light to moderate monthly involvement during early planning
    • Increased involvement during the final 4–6 months before the event
    • Full-day presence required on event day
    • Post-event wrap-up and reporting (up to 30 days)

    SUPPORT & STRUCTURE
    • Works closely with all Chapter Directors
    • Supported by national systems, templates, and training
    • Leadership responsibilities are shared across a structured team

    Supports the chapter leadership team by keeping information organized, documented, and easy to access, helping the chapter operate smoothly and stay aligned throughout the year.

    • Tracks important decisions, deadlines, and follow-ups
    • Supports clear internal communication across the leadership team

    • Event-day presence helpful but not always required

    ROLE PURPOSE
    Leads the recruitment, placement, and support of volunteers, ensuring every volunteer feels informed, valued, and prepared to serve throughout the year and on event day.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
    • Reviews volunteer applications and helps place volunteers into appropriate roles
    • Communicates expectations, schedules, and key details to volunteers
    • Coordinates with other Directors to ensure volunteer needs are met
    • Provides guidance and support to volunteers before, during, and after the event

    TIME COMMITMENT
    • 12-month leadership commitment
    • Light to moderate monthly involvement year-round
    • Increased involvement during the final 3–4 months before the event
    • Active, hands-on role on event day

    SUPPORT & STRUCTURE
    • Works closely with the Operations Director and all Chapter Directors

    • Not responsible for doing all volunteer work, but for organizing and supporting the team

    Helps ensure the Ride Out of the Darkness® event is safe, organized, and well-coordinated by supporting route planning, safety communication, and collaboration with law enforcement and escort partners.

    SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
    • Supports planning and communication of the ride route
    • Serves as a point of contact for law enforcement, escorts, and safety partners
    • Helps communicate safety expectations to volunteers and participants
    • Assists with on-route coordination and problem-solving on event day

    TIME COMMITMENT
    • 12-month leadership commitment
    • Light involvement during early planning
    • Increased involvement in the final 2–3 months before the event
    • Full availability during the ride and event day

    SUPPORT & STRUCTURE
    • Works closely with the Operations Director and Route Support Teams
    • Supported by established ride formats, safety guidelines, and past-event templates
    • Law enforcement and escort partners handle enforcement — this role supports coordination, not policing

    • Coordinates sponsor commitments, logos, and placements
    • Helps ensure sponsors feel appreciated and supported before and after the event

    • Light role on event day, focused on sponsor support and visibility

    Coordinates post-event cleanup and breakdown to ensure all event areas are left clean, safe, and respected after the Ride Out of the Darkness® event.

    • Coordinates breakdown of equipment, signage, and supplies
    • Ensures trash and materials are properly collected and disposed of
    • Confirms all event areas are cleared before final departure

    TIME COMMITMENT
    • 12-month leadership commitment
    • Minimal involvement during early planning
    • Primary responsibility immediately following the event
    • Short post-event follow-up as needed

    SUPPORT & STRUCTURE
    • Works closely with the Operations Director and Setup/Breakdown teams
    • Uses provided cleanup plans and checklists
    • Supported by volunteers assigned to cleanup efforts
